How To Train Your Mustache

As you might have noticed, the mustache is making something of a comeback. Much like fashion trends, various beard trends tend to come and go as time passes, and the same can be said for the mustache.

How To Train Your Mustache

The mustache was always seen as a facial hair style that represented rebellion, although this all changed in the 1980s, when mustaches became extremely popular, to the point where nearly everyone had one.

Not long after, however, mustaches soon fell out of favor. However, we think it’s probably safe to say that they are back in fashion once again.

In this article, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive guide to training your mustache, including what the training involves, why you should do it, and the tools you’ll need.

So, let’s get started!

What Is Mustache Training?

For those who have never really thought much about their mustache before, and have yet to learn more about growing a mustache, and the training it requires, then the idea of having to “train” your mustache sounds slightly ridiculous.

So, for the uneducated, allow us to explain a little more about mustaches, and why exactly they need training.

You see, the hairs found in your mustache area tend to be much coarser than the hair found on your head, and as a result, tend to grow in different patterns.

By leaving your mustache hairs to grow to their own devices, then you’ll end up with a wildly mismatched mustache growth. You’ll notice that different parts of your mustache will curl in different directions and angles, which ultimately results in a whole mess.

This is where mustache training comes in, as it helps you to manipulate the growth of your mustache, and involves a variety of different methods, including styling, trimming, as well as using the correct products, all of which will help you to control your ‘stache.

It doesn’t matter what style of mustache you’re aiming for, whether it’s a handlebar mustache, a thick cowboy-style mustache, or even if you’re looking to add a mustache gap, keeping your mustached properly sculpted is the key to a great-looking mustache!

Why Should You Train Your Mustache?

If you’re new to growing a mustache and already have made an attempt, then you’ll quickly realize that mustaches can be annoying, especially if your mustache happens to have a fair few stray growers that curl towards your nose or mouth.

This is exactly why training your mustache is so important for those who are looking to ensure they have a good-looking mustache. So, if you want to learn more about how you can train your mustache to grow the way you want, then you’ve come to the right place.

What You’ll Need To Train Your Mustache

Some men aren’t fans of certain beard styles without an accompanying mustache, which is completely understandable, as a result, it’s worth coming to terms with how to properly train and maintain your mustache to look its best.

You’ll also need to ensure that you have the right tools for the job, as using incorrect tools will lead to dodgy styling, and won’t help to train your mustache at all.

For training your mustache, we recommend:

  • Small scissors (grooming scissors preferably)
  • Mustache comb (Don’t worry about anything too complicated)
  • Beard brush
  • Styling products (Think mustache wax, beard balm, beard oil)

How To Do It

How To Train Your Mustache

Step 1 – Growth

The key to growing a great mustache at first is simply just to leave it be. It might sound counter-intuitive, but many people find that growing a mustache is simply easier when growing a mustache and a beard together.

If you’re looking to grow just a mustache, then you can always shave the rest of your beard off afterward.

So, for step one, all you need to do is give your mustache plenty of time to grow. For this, we’d recommend waiting around six to eight weeks depending on how fast your facial hair grows.

This should be enough time to allow the hairs to reach the top of your upper lip, which makes the perfect starting point for you to begin training.

Step 2 – Wash

As your facial hair begins to grow, there’s a chance you might begin to suffer from some itching, which can lead to further irritation, thankfully, preventing this is relatively easy.

All you’ll need to do is make sure that you’re washing your facial hair regularly, once every three days should be enough.

Be sure to avoid using general soap, which can cause flaking and breakouts on your face. If you’re going to use soap, then a beard wash will be better suited.

Step 3 – Beard Oil

Although your beard might not be at the stage where it is long enough to brush or comb, you should still ensure that you’re applying beard oil to it after washing it every day.

This helps to keep your facial hair nourished and moisturized, as well as soft and healthy, all while helping the skin underneath (Also check out How To Soften Mustache Hair).

Step 4- Training

After six to eight weeks, you can now begin to train your mustache. Whether you decide to use your fingers, a brush, or a comb is up to you, but using one of the latter two is generally easier.

Apply some beard oil, and then begin to brush your mustache downwards, then apply some beard balm to hold it in place, before using a comb or brush to part the two sides.

If you do plan on curling your mustache, don’t start yet, as you want to get the direction right first. Once you are ready, you can begin by using beard balm and twirling up the hair ends until your mustache begins to grow like that naturally.

Step 5 – Trimming

From here, you can then trim your mustache into shape. A traditional mustache only requires you to trim along the top of your upper lip line, which will prevent hairs from going into your mouth.

You can always experiment with styles, so be bold and try something new!

We hope that this guide to training your mustache has helped, and you’ll be sure to have a great-looking mustache in no time with this guide, good luck!
